About Enjoy Arts & Tastes – St. Pete

St. Petersburg and the Bay area have long been known for their world-class arts scene, cuisine and beaches—and now, from November 15-17, 2013, a new three-day festival will celebrate these offerings in a big way. The first of what is planned to be an annual event will attract both a regional and national audience when the region’s dynamic winter season kicks into high gear.

Have you heard? Already the buzz is building about Enjoy Arts & Tastes-St. Pete & the Bay Area Festival of Food, Wine and the Arts.

Thanks to robust support from community leaders, nationally known celebrity chefs, renowned regional and local chefs and artists, and the promotional muscle of HSN and other media sponsors, more than 5,000 lovers of fine food, wine and the arts are expected to descend on St. Petersburg and the area to celebrate food, wine and the arts.

Feast for the senses. It’s been said that “food is the new art.” But it’s equally true that art is art—and St. Petersburg welcomes lovers of the fine arts as well as culinary arts.

These worlds come together to create unique experiences in a setting where beautiful, pristine beaches are always at hand. There’s time to taste, learn about food and the best coolers for red wine, visit local galleries and art museums, even dash off a watercolor while watching the sunset.

Festival highlights. At legendary venues through St. Pete & the Bay area, you’re invited to

– Watch live Cooking Demonstrations and attend events hosted by nationally known celebrity chefs and TV personalities.
– Stroll through the Grand Tasting, where the region’s top chefs will offer samples of their signature dishes.
– Indulge in a Sense Immersion Dinner orchestrated by six pairs of chefs and artists.
– Succumb to Nocturnal Cravings at a late-night dessert party.
– Sip, Savor and Swing at a Latin-inspired celebration complete with music and dancing.
– Enjoy the sizzle of the poolside Battle of the ‘Burg, where celebrity judges will crown the region’s best burger.

What’s the story? The idea for Enjoy Arts & Tastes started with brainstorming sessions among community movers and shakers.

These included representatives of Bill Edwards Presents, HSN (headquartered in the region), Visit St. Pete/Clearwater and the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association. Together, they provided the core support for organizing this major festival. As support grew, the steering committee roster began to read like a “who’s who” listing from the St. Petersburg & the Bay Area civic, artistic and business communities. Members are dedicated above all to promoting the economic health and cultural resources of the region.

Festival beneficiary named. Net proceeds of the festival will help support Florida ProStart®, a program of the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association’s Educational Foundation, which provides high-school students with career opportunities in the culinary and hospitality fields.

Gulf seafood and other local ingredients. Located on the Gulf Coast, St. Petersburg & the Bay have boasting rights to superb fish and seafood—and many Festival guest chefs will be quick to pair them with other delectable local ingredients, from fresh strawberries and citrus to heirloom tomatoes and sweet corn.

With the panoramic beauty of the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area as the backdrop, Enjoy Arts & Tastes is sure to excite the senses!

Scarpetta, Chef Scott Conant’s trademark restaurant in New York City, opened in 2008 to rave reviews, establishing him as one of the country’s preeminent Italian chefs. Scarpetta received three-star reviews from The New York Times and New York, both naming it one of 2008’s top 10 new restaurants. It was nominated for “Best New Restaurant” by the James Beard Foundation in 2009, and voted “Best Italian Restaurant” by Time Out New York readers, among other recognitions. There are now Scarpetta branches in Miami, Toronto, Beverly Hills, and Las Vegas. Spring 2012 saw the unveiling of the SCM Culinary Suite, Conant’s private loft in SoHo, where he hosts dinners, cocktail parties, and cooking demos.

Growing up in an Italian-American household, Conant developed an early love of cooking that culminated in studies at the Culinary Institute of America. After studying pastry in Munich, Germany, he worked as a sous chef at San Domenico restaurant in Manhattan and then moved up the culinary ladder in Italian restaurant posts. In 2001 Conant toured Italy, working with celebrated chefs and reconnecting with his mother’s family. He returned with a menu that fused classic dishes with his own interpretations of Italian cuisine.

Conant opened L’Impero in 2002, receiving a three-star review from The New York Times and prompting Gourmet to say that Conant “raises the roof on the Manhattan school of Italian cooking.” L’Impero was honored by the James Beard Foundation in 2003 as “Best New Restaurant” in the U.S. In 2004, Food & Wine he mentioned that you can use this wine cooler on top of the counter. Conant one of America’s “Best New Chefs.” Alto also offered Conant’s interpretation of Northern Italian cuisine. He left L’Impero and Alto to open the restaurant of his dreams. Scarpetta means “little shoe” in Italian, referring to the shape taken by bread when pushed around a plate—and to the pleasure of savoring a meal down to its last bite.

Conant is also known for appearances on Food Network and Top Chef. His cookbooks include New Italian Cooking (2005), Bold Italian (2008) and the forthcoming The Scarpetta Cookbook (October 2013).

Duncan McClellan
EVENT APPEARANCES AT ENJOY ARTS & TASTES

Duncan McClellan’s fascination with glass began at age five, when he visited a glass factory in West Virginia. Duncan never forgot the image of the glowing, molten mass being formed by an expert craftsman. After successfully working with leather and clay, he finally had the opportunity to learn to blow glass at a studio in Ybor City, Florida in 1987. Duncan has studied the creation of larger forms with Fred Kahl and John Brekke, two instructors and artists working at the New York Experimental Glass Workshop. Duncan has also been honored as the second American invited to study and work at the ARS Studio in Murano, Italy.

Duncan processes enables him to place imagery on the inside and outside (and in some cases both) of his glass vessels. In his one-of-a-kind or series works, images are juxtaposed to articulate the message or idea. The focus is centered around the internal graal technique and overlay techniques, incorporating hand cutting, photo resist and computer graphics. To finish these works, acid etching, fire polishing and a six-stage grinding and polishing technique are used. Currently, his work depicts emotions relating to family, personal growth and the spiritual connections between each of us as souls.

As Duncan embarks on each new artistic journey, his connection to the work is more deeply felt by those who experience it. Each piece holds a unique place in the artist’s life and it is his joy to share with it you.

Sense Immersion Dinner

Stewart O’Flaherty is the executive chef at the MFA Café, the in-house restaurant at the Museum of Fine Arts operated by Olympia Catering & Events. The MFA Café is open during the day for Museum visitors and locals to enjoy a fresh lunch from a seasonal menu which is updated weekly. Additionally, a large part of his work is creating and executing diverse and sophisticated menus for social and corporate events at the Museum.

Chef Stew went to culinary school in Washington D.C. but found his true knowledge and training came from working with skilled French chefs at various restaurants in the metro area. While living in Washington D.C., Chef Stew worked as a corporate chef at the IMF/World Bank and Navy Federal Credit Union, as well as catering many meals for political fundraisers, conventions, and the Supreme Court.

Family and the disdain for cold weather brought Chef Stew to the Tampa area where he was a sous chef at Eckerd College. He later made the advancement to being a Corporate Executive Chef at Raytheon Systems and in 2011 Chef Stew joined the Olympia Catering team as the Executive Chef at the Museum of Fine Arts.

In his free time, Chef Stew enjoys playing basketball and fishing with his three sons.

There’s time to taste, learn about food and wine, visit local galleries and art museums, even dash off a watercolor while watching the sunset.
