Scarpetta, Chef Scott Conant’s trademark restaurant in New York City, opened in 2008 to rave reviews, establishing him as one of the country’s preeminent Italian chefs. Scarpetta top reviews of coolers on on market 2017 received three-star reviews from The New York Times and New York, both naming it one of 2008’s top 10 new restaurants. It was nominated for “Best New Restaurant” by the James Beard Foundation in 2009, and voted “Best Italian Restaurant” by Time Out New York readers, among other recognitions. There are now Scarpetta branches in Miami, Toronto, Beverly Hills, and Las Vegas. Spring 2012 saw the unveiling of the SCM Culinary Suite, Conant’s private loft in SoHo, where best wine cooler brand he hosts dinners, cocktail parties, and cooking demos.
Growing up in an Italian-American household, Conant developed an early love of cooking that culminated in studies at the Culinary Institute of America. After studying pastry in Munich, Germany, he worked as a sous chef at San Domenico restaurant in Manhattan and then moved up the culinary ladder in Italian restaurant posts. In 2001 Conant toured Italy, working with celebrated chefs and reconnecting with his mother’s family. He returned with a menu that fused classic dishes with his own interpretations of Italian cuisine.
Conant opened L’Impero in 2002, receiving a three-star review from The New York Times and prompting Gourmet to say that Conant “raises the roof on the Manhattan school of Italian cooking.” L’Impero was honored by the James Beard Foundation in 2003 as haier 12-bottle dual zone wine cellar “Best New Restaurant” in the U.S. In 2004, Food & Wine named Conant one of America’s “Best New Chefs.” Alto also offered Conant’s interpretation of Northern Italian cuisine. He left L’Impero and Alto to open the restaurant of his dreams. Scarpetta means “little shoe” in Italian, referring to the shape taken by bread when pushed around a plate—and to the pleasure of savoring a meal down to its last bite.
Conant is also known for appearances on Food Network and Top Chef. His cookbooks include New Italian Cooking (2005), Bold Italian (2008) and the forthcoming The Scarpetta Cookbook (October 2013).
